DISH Network recently had two successful satellite
launches, EchoStar III on October 5, 1997 and EchoStar IV on May 8, 1998. These
satellites allow the broadcast of digital local TV channels and specialized
programming to a dish-antenna pointed in its line-of-sight. Therefore a second
dish antenna is required if the customer wants core programming choices as well
as the specialized programming. We hope this section helps answer your
questions.
1. What types of services and programming will be
provided on EchoStar III & IV?
- Answer: Echostar III & IV will host a variety of international,
educational and business programming as well as data services. However, we will
begin by responding to our current and potential customers' number one
request...local network channels delivered digitally to your DISH Network
set-top box.
DISH Network will first focus on distributing local broadcast
network signals to unserved households in the larger markets east of Denver. We
plan to offer local broadcast networks for other cities sometime in the second
quarter 1998 when our fourth satellite will be launched to the 148 degree West
Longitude orbital location. The cost will be $4.99 per month, per local network
package. The package will consist of local ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and FOX
affiliates.
New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, Boston and Dallas/Ft. Worth
have been launched and are available for purchase. At this time, we are
negotiating to add other cities, which we'll announce as they become available.
2. Do I need two dish antennas if I want to keep my
current programming?
- Answer: Because Echostar III is positioned in a different orbital location
not in close proximity to our existing satellites (located at the 119-degree
orbital location) one dish antenna is not able to receive the signals from both
orbital locations. If you are interested in viewing the programming located on
the third satellite only, you may purchase and install a DISH Network satellite
TV system and direct the line of sight of the dish antenna at the 61.5-degree
location of EchoStar III. If you are interested in viewing the programming
located at both the 119-degree and 61.5-degree orbital location, the initial
dish antenna that comes with the system purchase should be installed and
pointed at 119-degrees. A second dish antenna kit will be required, with the
dish antenna pointed at the 61.5-degree location.
3. Will I be able to get my local network
affiliates without a second dish antenna?
- Answer: Only if all the programming you require is transmitted from the
same satellite as your local networks. In order to view both your local
channels and the programming already available from the satellite at 119
degrees (America's Top 40SM, America's Top
60CD, movie channels like HBO and Showtime, PPV movies, etc...) you will need a
second dish antenna.
4. How much does it cost to purchase and install a
second dish antenna?
- Answer: That depends on your system configuration and if you do-it-yourself
or have it professionally installed. Either way, the proper kit is determined
by how many DISH Network receivers you will be hooking up to your 2-dish
antenna solution. If you have just a single receiver, the SW21 kit retails for
$99 dollars. If you have 2 receivers, the SW42 kit retails for $149 dollars.
Professional installation could be slightly more. If you would like a quote for
a Professional Installation, contact DISH Network at 1-800-322-5552 or your
local independent DISH Network retailer for assistance.
5. What's the difference between doing it myself or
having it professionally installed?
- Answer: Its mostly a matter of convenience. However, DISH Network
recommends that you strongly consider having your second dish antenna and/or
new system professionally installed to ensure that all aspects of the job are
done correctly. Professional Installation also provides the reassurance that
the second dish antenna is properly connected to your home entertainment
system.
6. What new programming can I get right
now?
- Answer: Programming currently available on EchoStar III is Dominion Sky
Angel, TV5 (French Television), RFI (Radio France Internationale), RTPi
(Portuguese Television), TV Japan, Bloomberg Television, the NASA Channel and
digital local TV channels for select
cities. In the future, look for more local channels, additional international
channels, data services and specialized business and educational services to be
announced.
7. What additional programming will be available by
the end of the year?
- Answer: Good question! There is so much to choose from and so many
contracts that need to be negotiated, that it would be inappropriate for us to
speculate as to what programming we will have to offer that far out into the
future. General types of programming we hope to offer are: additional local
channels in selected markets, additional international channels, data and
Internet services and specialized business and educational services.
8. Will any programming be moving to EchoStar III
that would require me to reposition my current dish antenna or purchase an
additional dish antenna?
- Answer: Other than Dominions Sky Angel programming, there are no
definitive decisions as of this date regarding the relocation of other
programming services to Echostar III. Some new programming like TV5, French
Television, is being added for the first time to EchoStar III.
